French onion soup recipe. This is one of the most famous Christmas recipe in France. It was consider a dish for a simple people, because in that time there was an onion abundance. INGREDIENTS for 6 people:

  • 2 medium onions
  • 6 cups of homemade broth. You can use a meat or vegetable broth.
  • Grated cheese. The original recipe use Grüyere cheese but you can use another cheese, to your taste.
  • 1 tbsp of butter
  • 1 cup of white wine
  • 6 slice of breads of one or two days.
  • 2 tbsp of flour
  • Salt and pepper
  • Oil


Time needed: 45 minutes.

For making the French onion soup recipe, you only follow this simple steps:

  1. Cut the onion and cook it.

    At first, peel and cut the onion in thin strips. Then, in a pan, put an oil jet and the butter. Heat them over low heat until the butter is melted and it has integrated with the oil. Hereunder, add the onion, season and let to cook while stirring frequently for about 10 minutes. Until onion will be soft.

  2. Put the flour and the white wine.

    Now, add the flour and stir it while cooking it to remove its raw flavour. This flour will give a little of body to the onion soup. Let to cook it for about 3 minutes and then, add the white wine. Let to cook for about 2 minutes more until the alcohol will be evaporate.

  3. Then, add the homemade broth

    Afterwards, add the homemade broth, previously heated it. Stir it for about 2 minutes to remove the lumps and let to cook over medium heat all the ingredients for about 15 minutes more. It is available not to increase a lot of the heat because the flour can be burned.

  4. Finish to make the French onion soup recipe and serve it.

    Finally, place the onion soup on individual bowls. They have to be oven resistant. Put above it a slice of bread and over it some grated cheese. Put them in the oven with the grill put on over 392ºF, until the chesse will be well gratined.
