BAKED LEEKS IN BECHAMEL SAUCE

 

Baked leeks in bechamel sauce. Although everybody think vegetables are a healthy food, for many people eat them it is a challenge. In this ocassion, we are going to make a very simple recipe that mix vegetables, cheese and bechamel sauce. This mixture will delight anyone who like vegetables or not. Let´s to see how to make baked leeks in bechamel sauce in few steps.

 

INGREDIENTS for baked leeks in bechamel sauce for 4 people: 

 

  • 1 kg/ 35.5 oz. freshly leeks
  • 1/2 onion
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 1 litro/ 34 fl oz. milk
  • 90g/ 3 oz. flour
  • 90ml/ 3 fl oz. oil
  • Grated cheese
  • 1/2 tsp white pepper
  • 1 tsp nutmeg
  • Salt and pepper

 

BAKED LEEKS IN BECHAMEL SAUCE RECIPE:

 

1.- In a large casserole with a plenty of water over medium heat, put a handfull of salt and let to boil. When water is boiling, add the leeks previosly cleaned and cut into cubes. Let to cook it for about 15 minutes.

2.- While leeks are cooking, we are going to prepare the bechamel sauce. In a other casserole over medium heat, put the oil and let it to cook for a minute. Then, add the garlic cloves and the onion, both previously chopped. Season and let to cook for about 10 minutes, stirring all frequently.

3.- In the same casserole, maintaining the medium heat, add the flour. Let to cook for about 2 minutes more, stirring all frequently again. After that time, add the milk. Its avisable adding milk in 4 batches. In this way, milk will integrate better and no lumps will come out while stirring all frequently.

4.- When the bechamel sauce is done, add some white pepper and the nutmeg. Add some salt if it´s necessary and let to cook for about 10 minutes more over medium heat while stirring frequently.

5.- In a baking dish, put a layer of bechamel sauce. Above it, add the leeks and cover them with the rest of bechamel sauce. On top, sprinkle the grated cheese.

6.- Place the baking dish in the oven previosly heated over 200ºC/ 392ºF and let to melt for about 5 minutes until the top layer is browned.
